I was reminded by a friend that it’s important to balance the depressing news with stories that give people hope. This article is an example of just that…hope.
While the President, and the Progressives in Congress and around the country, are calling for gun bans and in some cases outright confiscations, the citizens of this country are wondering who they can turn to for help.
Fortunately, for the citizens of Lincoln County Missouri they now have the answer, their Sheriff John Cottle.
In response to numerous questions from concerned citizens, Sheriff Cottle posted this message on the Lincoln County Sheriff’s website stating that he, nor his deputies, will stand by and allow the federal government to encroach on rights and liberties:
Message from the Sheriff
To the Citizens of Lincoln County Missouri,In the past week I have received numerous questions from citizens regarding my views on President Obama’s attacks on our Constitution; specifically our Second Amendment.
The Constitution was not created by our founding fathers to be an evolving document; rather, it was specifically drafted to be an everlasting document to prevent the downfall of our Democratic Government. Our Constitution is not a living, breathing document to be changed by Congress, the Office of President or anyone else, unless it is the will of the people.
In 1986, I volunteered to serve in the United States Army. The oath I took was “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Since 1986, I have taken a similar oath on four different occasions, which affirmed, “I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Missouri”. The last time I swore to uphold these Constitutions was December 28, 2012, when I was sworn in as the Sheriff of Lincoln County.
As your Sheriff, I want you to know that it is my sworn duty, responsibility and privilege to protect your individual rights and liberties afforded and guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of the State of Missouri.
Neither my deputies, nor I will stand by and allow federal encroachment upon rights and liberties, which are afforded and guaranteed to every citizen by our constitutions.

Sheriff Cottle is not some fly by night Barney Fife whose statement can be brushed off easily. According to his Cottle for Sheriff website left over from last years election, he has an impressive history which, as he states above, not only consists of military service, but work as a canine officer, CI Commander, and even a stint with the DEA as well.
My hat goes off to Sheriff Cottle, a man who not only understands Liberty, but isn’t afraid to let everyone know it.
Because as the anti-gun / big government zealots try to make the sun set on the 2nd Amendment, people like Sheriff Cottle, give us all hope that our God given rights will indeed live to see another day.
