What does the City of St. Louis, the State of Illinois, and the City of Detroit all have in common? They are great examples of the failure of Progressive policies.
Recently there has been talk about merging the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. On one hand you have vibrant and thriving Counties. On the other, you have a City slowly rotting from the inside out. So the question is why bother merging?
If you are in the County there is absolutely no benefit to merging.
But to those who support the merger, there are two main reasons we should do it:
1. Unification of St. Louis City and St. Louis County will help end non-productive competition among St. Louis region municipalities and focus the region’s energies on opportunities to bring jobs to the St. Louis region.
2. Unification could save taxpayers substantial sums of money (an estimated $20 million annually under the “New Municipality” scenario and an estimated $200 million every year under the “Full Unification” approach) by eliminating duplication of services and departments.
That’s it? That’s the best they can come up with? Stifle competition and save money because towns won’t need their own Police Force or Fire Department? Really? When has losing local control of anything been a good idea? (Unless there is major corruption involved, but that’s a horse of a different color).
Now I know I left out the fact that by merging the City and the County it would make the crime statistics lower and make St. Louis more appealing to new business, well…at least on paper.
But in the age of the internet, do the supporters of the merger really think that a CEO of a major corporation is too stupid to Google the crime stats of previous years, before the merger, and realize that St. Louis hasn’t become safer, but instead, the stats are just diluted thanks to the merger? I think not.
In my opinion there’s only one political reason the City of St. Louis wants to merge with the predominately Conservative counties, and it’s the same reason St. Louis is failing in the first place. Progressivism. For the last 64 years the City of St. Louis has had a Progressive (Democrat) Mayor, and for 64 years Progressive Policies have transformed the city from one of prosperity into the shell of misery and taxation that it is today. Asking the Counties to merge with the City of St. Louis is just an attempt to plunder the tax revenue of the counties in order to bailout a failing Progressive city. (Not to mention a nice way to centralize power under a Progressive banner).
So if the Progressively run city of St. Louis wishes to steer from it’s path of self inflicted destruction then there’s really only one answer. Stop electing Progressives to office. It’s that simple.
If not… well then those of us in the Counties will just watch, wait, and bide our time until you are. Because as far as I’m concerned… you made the Progressive Hell Hole of a Bed we call St. Louis… and now… you can lay in it.
